2019 in Review pt 1: Postgraduate

Hi,

It has been a roller-coaster ride for 2019, plenty of up and downs of both mental and emotional trips.
For physical, I have been going to the gym for a while, saw a lot of improvements in the body shape but still a lot of room of improvements.

Finally, I had graduated after so many years of doing postgraduate studies. Not an easy path, a path that I will not recommend to others especially those without any prior working experience or networking experience. You have to know your future supervisors well and think a few times before applying.

The problem with Postgraduate Studies in Malaysia is due to mindset that the supervisors are everything, they control your entire journey, only with their blessing, you can advance and graduate. Being a postgraduate is different from being an undergraduate. Many forget that a postgraduate student is a customer, buying the experience of the supervisors to enrich and to be better a researcher and in the grander scheme of things, to increase the pool of knowledge within the country.

If you compare the taught process for those who do it locally and for those who do it overseas, the mindset and skills are totally different. The postgraduates who do it locally have better skills since they are trained from the basics to the complex process while those who did their studies overseas have better communication skills and critical thinking as most processes are automated which frees their time to spend reading and discussing.

This traits are brought forward to their working life in which adds flavor to the research world with their styles. Each school provides a different solution to the same problem, although those who are trained overseas will have a bit of problem in adapting to the lack of modern automated equipment which they enjoyed in their Alma mater.
